Clubman and Clubwoman End of Season Awards

A clubman of the year award thanks the person who keeps a club running rather than the one who scores the points. Football, rugby, cricket and hockey clubs all have one, and many now present a clubwoman of the year alongside it, or rename it club person of the year. This page covers who usually wins it, how committees choose, and how to word a glass award that reads well on the night.

What the award recognises

The clubman award goes to the member whose work happens away from the pitch. At a rugby club that might be the person who runs the bar rota and drives the minibus. At a cricket club it is often the groundsman who has rolled the square every evening since April, or the scorer who never misses a match. In football it is frequently the parent who became fixtures secretary and never stepped down. Include it in your end of season awards to thank the people behind the fixtures as well as the players.

It is usually the most personal award of the evening. Winners rarely expect it, and many have quietly done the job for years. That makes the wording matter more than usual.

Clubman, clubwoman or club person

Older clubs often have a single clubman trophy with a long history. Plenty now present clubman and clubwoman of the year as two awards, which works well where men's and women's sections share a committee, as many hockey and netball clubs do. Others prefer one award called club person of the year, or a chairman's award.

There is no right answer, but decide before you order. If you present two, order them in the same size so neither looks like the lesser award. Sizes can be mixed freely within one order, so the rest of the night can still use small blocks.

How the winner is chosen

Most clubs leave this to the committee rather than a members' vote, because the strongest candidates are often committee members themselves. A common method is for the chair to collect nominations by a set date, then for the committee to agree a winner with any nominee out of the room. Some clubs let the previous winner choose their successor.

Whatever the method, keep it quiet until the night. The surprise is part of the award.

Wording and design

Line one is the award title: CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR, CLUBWOMAN OF THE YEAR or CLUB PERSON OF THE YEAR. Line two is the club name, line three the winner's full name, and line four the season, such as 2025/26 for a winter sport or a single year for cricket and bowls. If your club has a named memorial trophy for a former secretary, put that name on line one and the clubman title on line two in place of the club name.

Your crest prints at the top in full colour. Old rugby and cricket badges often have fine lettering, so upload the largest file you have. Most clubs choose the Large block, at £13.99, for this one.

Questions

Can we present clubman and clubwoman of the year on the same order?

Yes. Each award in an order can carry its own title and name, so you can add both to the same basket along with the rest of your season's awards. The crest only needs uploading once, and you can choose a different size for each award.

Can we put the winner's club role on the award?

Yes. The crest already shows which club it is from, so some clubs swap the club name on line two for a short role such as FIXTURES SECRETARY or GROUNDSMAN. Keep it brief and watch how it sits under the crest as you type.

Will an old, detailed club badge print clearly?

Upload it as a PNG or JPG, ideally a transparent PNG, and use the largest version you have so fine lettering stays sharp. If the badge is white on a transparent background, we can add a dark backing panel so it shows on the glass.

How long does delivery take?

Made in Cornwall and delivered within 7 days Delivery is a flat £10.00 per order however many awards you include, so it makes sense to add the clubman award to your main end-of-season order rather than ordering it on its own.
