Sailing End of Season Awards

Sailing end of season awards usually come out at the annual prize-giving or laying-up supper, when the boats come out of the water and the club looks back over a summer of racing. A typical sailing club has a long list of series, classes and regattas to cover. Our printed glass awards carry your club burgee or crest in full colour with up to four lines of text for each helm, crew or cadet.

The sailing season and prize-giving

Most UK dinghy and keelboat clubs race from April to October, with spring, summer and autumn series, a club regatta and often an open meeting or two. The prize-giving follows in October or November, sometimes combined with the laying-up supper or the annual general meeting.

Clubs that run a winter or frostbite series through to March may hold a second, smaller prize-giving in spring. The sailing secretary or results officer normally draws up the prize list from the season's published results.

Awards sailing clubs give

Racing prizes are the backbone: series winners for each fleet, class champions for single-handed and double-handed dinghies such as Solos, Mirrors and Wayfarers, club regatta winners and the pursuit race. Fast and handicap fleets often have separate results, so it is worth checking how many places you award in each.

Beyond racing, many clubs recognise a helm of the year, a crew of the year, a junior or cadet sailor of the year for those sailing Optimists and Toppers, and a most improved sailor. Race officers and safety boat crews make club racing possible, so a volunteer award is a popular addition.

Burgees and club badges

Sailing clubs are identified by their burgee, the triangular flag flown at the masthead, and many use it as their logo. A burgee is wide and pointed, so it sits well at the top of the glass. Some clubs also have a round badge with anchors, waves or rope borders and fine lettering, which needs a large, sharp file. We print in full colour, and white designs can sit on a dark backing panel.

Wording for series, classes and crews

Put the series or event on line one, for example SUMMER SERIES or CLUB REGATTA, then the club name on line two. Line three is the sailor's name and line four the class and position, such as SOLO 1ST. For a double-handed boat, give the helm and crew one award each with both names on line three.

Since the racing season runs within one summer, most clubs use a single year. Small awards suit series places and class results, with large awards for club champion and the main trophies. Mix them freely in one order, add names without uploading the burgee again, and check fit in the live on-screen mock-up.

Questions

Can we use our burgee instead of a crest?

Yes. Upload the burgee as a PNG or JPG, ideally a transparent PNG, and it prints in full colour at the top of the award. Its wide triangular shape suits the top of the glass well.

How should we word awards for helm and crew?

Most clubs give one award each to helm and crew. Use the same design with both names on line three, for example J. REES AND M. REES, so the pair have matching awards.

We award first, second and third in every series. Is there a quick way to order?

Set up one design for each series and change the position and name lines for each place. The bulk option lets you paste a list of names, and the order only needs to reach 5 awards in total.

What does delivery cost?

Delivery is a flat £10.00 per order, whether you order 5 awards or 50. Made in Cornwall and delivered within 7 days Ordering once the final series results are confirmed works well for an autumn prize-giving.
