Athletics End of Season Awards
Athletics end of season awards have to cover more ground than almost any other sport. A single club may have sprinters, throwers, cross-country runners and veterans, across age groups from under-11s to over-70s. This page looks at how UK athletics clubs organise their annual awards and how to plan an order that covers every section.

When the athletics year ends
The outdoor track and field season usually runs from April to September, with league fixtures, county championships and open meetings through the summer. Cross-country then takes over from October to March, and road races carry on all year round.
Because of that overlap, many clubs hold one annual awards evening in the autumn, often at a dinner in October or November once track results are in. Others present at the AGM, or split things so cross-country awards are handed out in the spring.
Awards athletics clubs typically give
Most clubs give athlete of the year awards by age group and gender, plus separate track, field and endurance awards. Most improved, club colours and club championship winners are common too, with the championship often decided on age-graded points so any age can compete.
Do not forget the people who make meetings happen. A league match cannot go ahead without officials, so an officials' award, a coach of the year and a volunteer of the year are often among the most applauded presentations of the night.
Wording across age groups and events
Athletics uses specific age categories, so put them on the award: U13 GIRLS, U17 MEN, SENIOR WOMEN or V50 MEN. A clear layout is award title, club name, athlete and category, with the year dropped if space is tight.
Track and field awards suit a single year, as the season sits within the summer. Cross-country awards run across winter, so a season such as 2025/26 makes more sense there.

Who organises the awards
In most athletics clubs the committee sets the award criteria, while event group coaches and team managers put forward names. The club championship results usually come from whoever keeps the points table. Agreeing a deadline for nominations, a few weeks before the dinner, gives time to check results, settle any disagreements and place a single order with every name correct.

How many awards does an athletics club usually need?
It depends on how many age groups you recognise. A boy and girl or man and woman in each age category, plus track, field and endurance awards and a few volunteer awards, can easily reach thirty. Start from your membership categories and work outwards.
Should we include the athlete's event on the award?
For age group awards, the category line is usually more useful. For specialist awards, such as a sprint or throws award, the event can replace the year on line 4 to make the award more personal.
Can we give awards to officials and volunteers in the same order?
