Athletics Track Athlete of the Year Award

An athletics track athlete of the year award covers everything run on the oval: sprints, hurdles, relays and middle distance. The challenge for any committee is comparing a 100m runner with an 800m runner or a hurdler, as their times cannot be set side by side. This page explains how clubs make that choice fairly and how to word the award.

Athletics end of season awards: which events count as track

Most clubs include everything from 60m indoors and 100m up to 800m, along with the hurdles and relays. Where the line falls for longer races varies. Some clubs keep 1,500m in the track award, while others put it with the endurance award alongside cross-country and road running.

Deciding this before the season ends saves arguments later. Write it into the awards criteria so a middle-distance runner knows which award they are competing for.

How the winner is chosen

To compare different events, many clubs use points scoring tables, which give each performance a score regardless of the event. A sprinter's best 200m and a hurdler's best 400m hurdles can then be ranked fairly. Others look at national ranking positions for each age group.

Championship results matter too. A county title, an area medal or a national final usually weighs heavily, and coaches often add points for league matches where an athlete doubled up to score points for the team.

Wording for a track award

TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR fits comfortably on line 1. Use line 4 for the age category, such as U15 BOYS or SENIOR WOMEN, so the award is clear years later. The athlete's name and club fill the middle lines.

If the award is for one discipline, the title can say so: SPRINTER OF THE YEAR or HURDLER OF THE YEAR. Track awards are earned in the summer, so a single year works well on the last line if you have room.

Where it sits in the awards evening

Track athlete of the year is usually presented alongside the field and endurance awards, often by age group. Many clubs give the senior and overall junior winners a Large award at £13.99, with age group winners on the Small block at £8.99.

Because sizes mix freely, a single design can be repeated for each age group using the same crest, new name option. Change the name and category, and every award matches.

Junior and senior track awards

Juniors often race a wide range of events as they find their strengths, so a track award for an under-13 might reflect a strong season across sprints, hurdles and relays rather than one standout time. Senior and masters athletes usually specialise, and their award tends to reflect ranking positions and championship results. Separate awards for juniors and seniors keep the comparison sensible, and most clubs divide by gender as well.

Questions

How do we compare sprinters with middle-distance runners?

Points scoring tables are the usual answer. Each performance is given a score based on the event, so a 100m time and an 800m time can be compared directly. Many clubs combine that with championship results.

Should relays count towards the track award?

Relay medals are worth noting, but most clubs judge the award on individual performances, since a relay result depends on four athletes. A separate relay team award is a good way to recognise a successful squad.

Can we give one track award per age group?

Yes, and most clubs do. Design the first award, then change the athlete's name and the category line for each age group, keeping the same crest without uploading it again.

What is the minimum order?

The minimum is 5 awards, mixed across sizes and designs. Small awards are £8.99 and Large awards £13.99, with a flat £10.00 delivery charge however many you order.
