Athletics Endurance Athlete Award

An athletics endurance athlete award covers the runners whose year spans the most surfaces: track in summer, cross-country mud in winter and road races in between. It is often the hardest award to judge, because no two endurance runners have raced the same programme. This page looks at what to count and how to word the award for a winter season.

Athletics end of season awards: what counts as endurance

Most clubs include track races from 1,500m or 3,000m upwards, the steeplechase, cross-country, road races from 5k to the marathon, and sometimes fell or trail races. Some clubs also count the fastest performances at parkrun, though most keep it to competitive races.

Agree where the boundary with the track award sits. A middle-distance runner who raced the 800m and 1,500m all summer may fit either, so make the criteria clear.

Weighing a mixed season

Cross-country leagues and county, area and national championships give clear team and individual results, and many clubs weigh those heavily because they are tough, competitive races. Road performances can be compared through age-graded percentages, which also lets a veteran compete fairly with a senior.

Commitment matters too. The athlete who turned out for every cross-country league fixture, scoring for the team in poor weather, is often more valued than someone with one fast marathon time.

Wording for an endurance award

ENDURANCE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR is long but fits on line 1; check it in the live view. Alternatives include DISTANCE RUNNER OF THE YEAR or a dedicated CROSS COUNTRY ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.

Cross-country runs from autumn to spring, so a season like 2025/26 on the last line describes it correctly. Put the category, such as SENIOR MEN or V45 WOMEN, on another line.

Where it fits in the presentation

Endurance awards are often presented alongside track and field, but some clubs hold a separate cross-country presentation in the spring. If you do, order for that evening in its own right, so the awards reflect the winter season just finished.

Small awards at £8.99 suit age group winners, while overall men's and women's endurance athletes often get the Large block at £13.99. Minimum order is 5 awards, mixed freely.

Juniors, seniors and masters

Junior endurance athletes race shorter distances and focus on cross-country and track, so their award usually reflects league and championship placings. Seniors may race everything from 5k to the marathon. Masters runners, who make up a large part of many clubs' endurance sections, are often best compared through age grading. Many clubs give separate awards for each group, which helps the award feel within reach for a wider range of runners.

Team results matter in endurance running more than anywhere else in athletics. Cross-country and road relay teams are scored on the finishing positions of several runners, so the athlete who packs in as a scoring counter is genuinely valuable to the club.

Questions

Should cross-country have its own award?

Clubs with large cross-country squads often give one, as the winter season is a big part of their year. Smaller clubs usually fold it into a single endurance award that covers track, road and country together.

How can veterans compete fairly for an endurance award?

Age grading converts a time into a percentage of the standard for that age and sex, so a V60 runner's 10k can be compared fairly with a senior's. Many clubs use it for road performances in particular.

Should a marathon time count for the endurance award?

Most clubs include road races, the marathon among them. Just make sure one fast race does not outweigh a whole season of consistent racing, and set out how road results are judged in your criteria.

When will the awards arrive?

Made in Cornwall and delivered within 7 days If you are presenting cross-country awards in the spring and track awards in the autumn, two separate orders each at flat £10.00 delivery keeps each evening simple.
