Athletics Field Athlete of the Year Award

An athletics field athlete of the year award recognises the jumpers and throwers who are easy to overlook while everyone watches the track. Field groups are often small and train with specialist coaches, yet in league matches they score just as many points as the sprinters. This award gives them proper recognition at the end of the season.

Athletics end of season awards: jumps, throws and combined events

The field events are high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump, plus shot, discus, hammer and javelin. A field athlete of the year award can cover all of them, or a club with strong groups might split it into a jumps award and a throws award.

Combined events athletes, who compete in the heptathlon or decathlon, need a decision too. Some clubs put them with field, some give them their own award, and some judge them for athlete of the year overall.

Judging field performances fairly

Comparing a pole vaulter with a discus thrower needs a common measure. Points scoring tables do that job well, turning each best mark into a score. Ranking positions within the age group are another fair option.

Coaches often value league contribution as well. Field athletes at league matches regularly compete in two or three events to fill gaps in the team, and that willingness to score points is worth weighing alongside personal bests.

Wording for field awards

FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR sits on line 1, with the athlete and age category below. If you split the award, use JUMPER OF THE YEAR or THROWER OF THE YEAR, or name the event group on line 4.

Throwers move to heavier implements as they move up age groups, so the age category on the award matters. U17 WOMEN or U20 MEN tells anyone who reads it exactly which standard the athlete was competing at.

Ordering for a field group

Even with separate awards for jumps and throws by age group, field awards alone rarely reach the minimum of 5, so most clubs order them with their track and endurance awards. Small awards at £8.99 suit age group winners, with the Large block at £13.99 for the overall winner.

Design one field award and repeat it with the same crest, new name option, changing the title, athlete and category each time. Delivery is a flat £10.00 for the whole order.

Supporting a small event group

Field groups often depend on one or two specialist coaches and a handful of athletes, so recognition at the awards evening helps keep them going. Clubs sometimes add a coach's award for the jumps or throws group, or a league points award for the field athlete who scored most for the team. These sit well alongside field athlete of the year and help bring newer athletes into the events.

Good to know

Questions

Should we have separate jumps and throws awards?

If you have enough athletes in both groups, yes. Jumpers and throwers train separately and rarely compare themselves with each other. Smaller clubs often keep a single field award so it stays meaningful.

Where do heptathletes and decathletes fit?

Clubs handle it differently. A combined events athlete can be judged on their field marks, given a dedicated multi-events award, or considered for athlete of the year overall. Decide before the season ends and write it into the criteria.

How should we compare marks across different field events?

Points scoring tables convert each mark into a score that can be compared across events. Rankings within the athlete's age group are a good second check, especially where implement weights differ.

Our crest is a wide club name rather than a badge. Will it fit?

Wide wordmarks print well, and the taller Large block often gives them a little more room. Check the live view as you type to see how it sits above the lines of text.
