Surfing End of Season Awards

Surfing end of season awards mark a year of club contests, early starts and chasing swell. UK surf clubs, from Cornwall and Devon to Wales, Scotland and the north east, run contest series across the year and close with a presentation night for juniors, seniors and every board type. We print in Helston, not far from the breaks, putting your club logo in full colour on glass with up to four lines of text.

How surf club seasons work

Unlike most sports, surf contests depend on the swell, so club series run as a set of rounds with flexible dates, many in autumn, winter and spring when the waves are more reliable. Clubs usually hold their awards night at the end of the series or at the club AGM, often in late spring or early summer, though some prefer a winter get-together.

If your series crosses two years, "2025/26" works well on the bottom line. A series run within one year can take the year alone.

Categories and awards

Club contests are usually divided by board and age: Open Shortboard, Women's, Longboard, Bodyboard, Juniors in bands such as under-12s, under-14s, under-16s and under-18s, and Masters for older surfers. Some clubs add Stand Up Paddle or Adaptive categories. A champion and runner-up per category is common.

Alongside the results, surf clubs keep their own traditions: Grom of the Year for the youngest standout, Most Improved Surfer, Wave of the Year chosen by the judges or members, a Club Spirit award, and a Volunteer award for the people who set up the beach, judge heats and run the scoring.

How many to order

With eight categories and two places in each, plus special awards, a club may need twenty or more. Large awards at £13.99 suit category champions and Wave of the Year, with Small at £8.99 for runners-up and junior awards. The minimum order is five, sizes mix freely and every award can carry a different name.

Set up one design, then use Same crest, new name for each category winner. Delivery is a flat £10.00 for the whole order.

Surf logos and wording

Surf club logos are often illustrative: a curling wave, a local headland, or a retro badge with hand-drawn lettering, sometimes in many colours. Full colour printing suits these well, but hand-drawn line work needs a large, sharp file. If the logo was designed for printing in white on hoodies, ask for the transparent version and choose the dark backing panel.

Use line 1 for the award (OPEN CHAMPION), line 2 for the category ("U16 Girls Shortboard"), line 3 for the surfer and line 4 for the series. For Wave of the Year, the beach or reef and the month make a good fourth line.

Good to know

Questions

What is a grom award?

Grom is surf slang for a young surfer. Grom of the Year usually goes to the young member who has shown the most progress or commitment, and is often decided by the club's coaches or contest organisers rather than by points.

Can bodyboard and longboard categories have different award titles?

Yes. Every award has its own text, so you can put the board type on line 1 or line 2 as you prefer, for example LONGBOARD CHAMPION, or CHAMPION with Longboard Open on the line beneath.

Should Wave of the Year be a Large award?

Many clubs think so, since it is often the award people talk about most. Mixing one Large award with Small category awards in the same order is straightforward and helps it stand out on the presentation table.

How long will our awards take?

Made in Cornwall and delivered within 7 days Because surf contest finals can move with the swell, it is worth ordering as soon as the final round has run rather than waiting until the week of the awards night.
