Runner Up Awards for Leagues, Cups and Finals
Runner up awards are easy to forget and often appreciated more than expected. A league runners-up spot can mean promotion, a cup final defeat can still be the best run in a club's history, and in individual sports like golf, bowls, squash and athletics the second-placed finisher may have played well all season. This page covers when a runner-up award makes sense and how to word it so it feels earned.

When a runner-up award is worth giving
League runners-up are the clearest case, especially where second place brings promotion, as it often does in football, rugby and hockey leagues. Losing cup finalists are another: reaching a county cup final is a season to remember for a grassroots team. In club competitions, such as a golf club championship or a bowls singles final, the runner-up has usually come through several rounds to get there. They can share an order with your end of season awards, mixing sizes and wording to suit each team.
It is less welcome when it lands on someone who would rather forget the result. If you are unsure, ask the captain or the player quietly beforehand.
Runners-up, finalist or second place
The word on line one changes how the award feels. RUNNERS-UP is standard for a team in a league or cup. CUP FINALISTS puts the emphasis on reaching the final rather than losing it, which many clubs prefer for juniors. SECOND PLACE suits athletics, swimming, cycling and golf, where positions are measured rather than decided in a final.
Line two can name the competition, such as COUNTY JUNIOR CUP or DIVISION TWO, line three the team or player, and line four the season, such as 2025/26.

Matching the winner's award
If your club also presents the winner's award, keep the design the same and change only the wording, so the pair clearly belong to one competition. A common choice is Large at £13.99 for the winner and small at £8.99 for the runner-up, though for a league runners-up side that won promotion, Large feels right.
Where the winner is another club, as in a league or county cup, you will only be ordering the runner-up award, so the matching question does not arise. In that case, simply choose the size that fits the achievement. Reaching the final of a county cup for the first time deserves more than a token gesture.
Whole-squad runner-up awards
For a team that finished second in a league or reached a cup final, a small award for every squad member often means more than one shared trophy. Design one award, then add each player using the same crest, new name option, or paste the squad list with the bulk option.
Add them to the main presentation order to keep everything in one delivery, and present them alongside the team's other awards rather than at the end of the night.

Good to know
Questions
Should runners-up get the same size award as winners?
It depends on the competition. Many clubs give winners Large and runners-up small, so the difference is clear on the night. For a league runners-up place that earned promotion, plenty of clubs choose Large for both.
What wording suits a junior cup final defeat?
CUP FINALISTS on line one tends to go down better than RUNNERS-UP with younger players, because it marks reaching the final. Add the cup name on line two, the child's name on line three and the season on line four.
Can we order third-place awards too?
Yes. Each award in an order can have its own wording, so you can add THIRD PLACE awards alongside winners and runners-up. This is common in athletics, swimming and golf competitions with several placings.
Is there a minimum order for runner-up awards?
Yes, the minimum order is 5 awards, but they can be any mix of titles, names and sizes. Most clubs add runner-up awards to their main season order, as delivery is a flat £10.00 per order.
