Long Service Award for Club Members

A long service award marks years rather than one season. Bowls and golf clubs often present them for decades of membership, cricket and rugby clubs for appearance milestones, and almost every club for the committee member who has served longer than anyone can remember. Because these awards tend to be kept for life, the wording and design deserve more thought than a standard season award.

Which milestones to mark

Membership milestones are the simplest: 10, 25, 40 or 50 years. Playing milestones suit team sports, such as 100 or 250 appearances for a cricket first XI, or 300 games across a rugby club's senior sides. Service milestones cover officers, coaches and umpires: 20 years as treasurer, or 10 years running the junior section. Alongside your end of season awards, it offers a way to thank members whose contribution spans many years.

Agree a short list and record it in the club rules or minutes, so future committees present the same awards to the same standard. Many clubs pair a 50-year milestone with honorary life membership.

Getting the numbers right

The hardest part is often knowing who has reached a milestone. Older membership records can be patchy, so ask long-standing members well before the presentation, and check scorebooks or match records for appearance counts. Getting a number wrong in public is worse than leaving it off, so if in doubt, use a title without a number, such as LONG SERVICE AWARD.

It also helps to agree what counts. Does a season as a social member count towards 25 years? Do friendly matches count as appearances, or only league and cup games? Cricket and rugby clubs in particular can have strong opinions on this, so settle it in committee before the names are announced, not in the bar afterwards.

Wording for long service

Line one carries the milestone, such as 25 YEARS SERVICE, 50 YEARS MEMBERSHIP or 100 APPEARANCES. Line two is the club name and line three the person's name. Line four can show the role, such as CLUB SECRETARY or GROUNDSMAN, or the span of years they served, with a dash between the first and last year.

Heritage clubs, particularly in bowls, golf and cricket, often have detailed crests with small lettering and fine linework. Upload the largest, sharpest file you have, ideally a transparent PNG, so the detail holds up on the glass.

When and how to present them

Long service awards suit an AGM, annual dinner or club anniversary as well as an end-of-season night. Bowls clubs often present them at the autumn dinner after the outdoor season, while football clubs fit them into the summer presentation.

Because several people may reach milestones in the same year, add them all to one order. Most clubs choose the Large block at £13.99 for these, as they tend to be displayed at home for many years.

Questions

Can we order awards for several different milestones in one go?

Yes. Each award in an order can have its own title and name, so a 10-year, a 25-year and a 50-year award can all go together with the same crest. Sizes can be mixed too, so you can choose Large for the biggest milestone.

What if our crest has changed over the years?

Use the crest the club uses now, or the older one if it means more to the recipient. Upload any version as a PNG or JPG. Designs can be mixed freely, so different awards in one order can carry different crests.

Can we mark a long-serving umpire or referee?

Yes. Put the role and milestone on line one, such as 20 YEARS UMPIRING, with the club or league name and the person's name below. Cricket and hockey clubs often thank their regular umpires this way at the annual dinner.

Is there a minimum order?

The minimum is 5 awards per order. If you only have one or two long service awards this year, add them to your end-of-season order, as delivery is a flat £10.00 whatever the quantity.
