Bowls Most Improved Award

A bowls most improved award recognises a member who has come on noticeably over the season, often someone who took up the game recently or moved from social roll-ups into competitive bowling. Bowls is a sport people can start at any age, and many clubs welcome new members every spring, so this is one of the awards that matters most for keeping them.

Bowls end of season awards: who tends to win it

Typical winners are newer bowlers who started with coaching sessions, joined the club's friendlies and finished the season holding their place in a league side. It can also go to a junior, or to an experienced bowler who has worked on one part of their game, such as drawing to the jack on the backhand or controlling weight on a fast green.

Selectors and captains see more of each player's bowling than anyone, so their view is usually central. Coaches who ran the club's beginners' sessions in spring are also well placed to say how far someone has come since their first roll-up.

How clubs choose

There is no points table for this award, so it is normally a committee or captains' decision, sometimes with input from the club coach. Some clubs invite members to nominate, then the committee chooses.

A few clubs link it to the novice or new bowlers' competition, but most keep it separate, as a bowler can improve a great deal without winning anything. Writing a sentence or two about why the winner was chosen makes the presentation more personal.

Wording ideas

"MOST IMPROVED BOWLER" fits well on line 1. Line 2 can carry the club name, or "Ladies' Section" if the club presents by section. Line 3 is the name and line 4 the year.

Some clubs give the award a longer title, such as "MOST IMPROVED BOWLER OF THE YEAR". If it is too long for one line, put "MOST IMPROVED BOWLER" on line 1 and "of the Year" on line 2, then check the on-screen design to see how it balances.

Small or large block

Most improved usually sits below the championships in the running order, so many clubs use the small square block. Some prefer the large block to make a point of welcoming newer bowlers, which is worth considering if recruitment is a priority for the club.

Either way, order it alongside the competition awards. You can mix sizes and designs freely, the badge only needs uploading once, and delivery is one flat charge for the whole order.

Think too about inviting the winner's coach or mentor to present it. Many clubs pair new members with an experienced bowler for their first season, and having that person hand over the award is a simple way to recognise both of them.

Questions

Can there be separate men's and ladies' most improved awards?

Yes. Many clubs present one in each section. Add the second with "same crest, new name" and change the section line, both in the same order.

Does the winner have to have won a competition?

No. Most clubs choose the most improved bowler on progress, not results. It often goes to someone who has not won a final but has clearly moved on as a player.

Can we add a short message to the award?

You have four lines of text, all optional. Many clubs use one line for a short phrase such as "Well Bowled" or "First Full Season", alongside the title and name.

Is there a minimum order?

Yes, the minimum is 5 awards per order, in any mix of small (£8.99) and large (£13.99) blocks and any mix of wording. Delivery is a flat £10.00 per order.
