Hockey Clubperson of the Year Award

The hockey clubperson of the year award goes to the person who did the most for the club off the pitch. Many hockey clubs moved from "clubman" to "clubperson" because their sections are mixed and the volunteers behind them are as likely to be women as men. It is often the most applauded award of the evening.

Hockey end of season awards: what the award recognises

Hockey clubs rely heavily on volunteers. Someone has to book pitch time, sort umpires for every fixture, run the junior section on Sunday mornings, manage team selection across several sides, organise the tea and keep the kit cupboard in order.

The clubperson award is for that work. The winner might not play at all. Past winners at many clubs include fixture secretaries, junior coaches, umpires and parents who simply turned up every week to help.

How winners are chosen

The committee usually decides, sometimes after inviting nominations from members by email or a form on the club website. Some clubs let the outgoing winner choose the next, which keeps it personal. Whatever the method, write down a short reason for the choice, as it makes the presentation speech much easier.

If the club gives a long-standing perpetual trophy for this award, a glass block is a good keepsake for the winner to take home and keep.

Wording that suits the award

"CLUBPERSON OF THE YEAR" fits on line 1. Some clubs prefer "CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR" or "CLUBWOMAN OF THE YEAR", and you can type whichever your club uses. Put the club name on line 2 if it is not already in the crest, then the winner's name, then the season, "2025/26".

Because the winner is honoured for the whole club rather than a team, there is no need for a team line. That leaves room for a short phrase such as "For Service to the Club".

Choosing the size

This is the award most clubs give in the large portrait block, as it sits at the top of the night with players' player. If you also recognise an umpire of the year or a volunteer of the year, those can be large or small depending on how you rank them.

Keep the presentation in mind when you order. The clubperson award usually comes near the end of the night, after the team awards, and the winner is often genuinely surprised. Keep the name off any printed programme, and make sure whoever collects the delivery knows which block to keep out of sight until the moment arrives.

Recognising more than one volunteer

Some years the committee cannot separate two people, perhaps the junior co-ordinator and the fixtures secretary. Giving two awards with the same title is entirely reasonable. Others add a separate umpire of the year, since umpiring is one of the hardest volunteer jobs to fill in club hockey and clubs need to encourage it.

Good to know

Questions

Why do hockey clubs say clubperson rather than clubman?

Many hockey clubs run men's, women's and mixed teams side by side, and the title reflects that. Type any title you prefer, since each line prints exactly as entered.

Can a non-playing volunteer win?

Yes, and they often do. The award is about contribution to the club, so committee members, coaches, umpires and parent helpers are all common winners.

Can we print the club name as well as the crest?

Yes. Upload the crest for the top of the award and use one of the four lines for the club name. If the name is already in the crest, use the line for something else.

How long will it take to arrive?

Made in Cornwall and delivered within 7 days Delivery is a flat £10.00 per order, whatever the quantity, so it is worth ordering this alongside all your team awards rather than in a separate order of its own.
