Hockey Players' Player Award

The hockey players' player award is voted for by the squad itself, which is why many players value it more than anything else on the table. It rarely goes to the flashiest player. More often it is the defender who covered every channel, the midfielder who turned up to every game or the keeper who kept a struggling side in matches.

Hockey end of season awards: how the vote usually works

Most teams run a simple secret ballot near the end of the season. Captains collect votes on paper after the last league game, by message, or with an online form, and each player names one or three teammates in order. Three points for a first choice, two for a second and one for a third is a common system and it reduces ties.

Players normally cannot vote for themselves. Agree who counts the votes, usually the captain or a committee member who does not play in that side, so nobody questions the result.

Running it across a whole club

In a club with several senior teams, players often move between sides through the season. Decide whether someone can win for the team they played most games for, or for any team they appeared in. Most clubs choose the first.

Junior sections tend to use coaches' awards instead, as younger players can turn the vote into a popularity contest. From around U14 upwards a players' vote often works well and gives teenagers a say.

Wording for a players' player award

The title is the longest of the common hockey awards, so it is worth keeping the other lines short. "PLAYERS' PLAYER" fits comfortably on line 1. If you want the full "Players' Player of the Season", put "PLAYERS' PLAYER" on line 1 and "of the Season" on line 2, then the name and team below.

A clean layout is: title, team ("Ladies' 1st XI"), player name, season ("2025/26"). The crest sits above the text and prints in your club's colours.

Size and timing

Because this is a peer award, many clubs give it a large block, with small blocks for the statistical awards in the same team. Votes often come in late, so collect them before the last fixture if you can, then order with the other awards. You can pick the size for each award individually within one order.

Think about how the winner is announced, too. Reading out a line or two of what teammates wrote on their voting slips, without naming who wrote them, is a popular touch at hockey dinners. It reminds the room that the award came from the people who shared the pitch with the winner every Saturday.

Mixed teams and joint sections

Clubs with a mixed side, or a men's and ladies' section that share a captain's committee, sometimes run one combined vote. If so, decide in advance whether the mixed team gets its own award or whether its players vote in their usual league team. Either works, as long as everyone knows the rule before the slips go out.

Questions

Is it players' player or player's player?

Players' player, with the apostrophe after the s, because the award comes from all the players. Type it exactly as you want it printed, since the text appears on the glass as entered.

Can each team have its own players' player award?

Yes. Create the first design with your crest, then use "same crest, new name" to add each team's winner with their own team name. The minimum order is 5 awards across the whole order.

What if the vote is tied?

Some clubs use first-choice votes as a tie-break, others give a joint award. A joint award is easy to order: two blocks with the same title and different names.

How much does each award cost?

Small square blocks are £8.99 each and large portrait blocks are £13.99 each. Delivery is a flat £10.00 per order, however many awards you include.
