Cricket Clubman of the Year Award

The cricket clubman of the year award thanks the person who keeps the club going off the field. A cricket club needs a remarkable amount of unpaid work: teas, scoring, umpiring, rolling, mowing, the bar and the fixture list. This award is how the club says thank you. We print it on glass in full colour, with your badge at the top and the winner's name beneath.

Cricket end of season awards: the work behind every match

Before a ball is bowled on Saturday, someone has cut and rolled the square, marked the creases, put the covers on during Thursday's rain and taken them off again. Someone has confirmed the umpires, ordered the bar stock and made sure there is milk for the teas.

Clubman of the year goes to one of those people. Often they are still playing, but just as often they are a retired player, a parent from the junior section or a scorer who has not missed a home game in years.

Nominating and choosing

The committee usually decides, sometimes after asking members for nominations. Inviting nominations is worth doing, because the work that matters is not always visible to the committee: the person who runs the junior nets on Friday evenings, or who quietly does the club's paperwork.

Presenting it at the annual dinner, rather than the last match, gives it the attention it deserves and means the winner's family can be there.

Try not to give it to the same stalwart every year. Long-serving volunteers deserve thanks, but rotating the award brings newer helpers into view, such as the parent who started running the bar or the young player who began umpiring junior games. Some clubs keep a separate long service honour for the people who have done the job for decades, which frees clubman of the year to reward the past season alone.

Clubman, clubwoman or clubperson

Clubman of the year is the traditional cricket title and many clubs keep it. Others now use CLUBWOMAN OF THE YEAR when appropriate, or switch to a neutral CLUBPERSON OF THE YEAR or VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR. The title line is free text, so use whatever suits your club and the winner.

Since the winner may not be a player, the fourth line is a good place for their role, such as GROUNDSMAN or SCORER, instead of the year.

Size and ordering

Because clubman of the year is a club-wide honour, many clubs choose the large block at £13.99, taller and more substantial than the per-XI awards. Order it with the season's other awards from the same badge design, to reach the minimum of 5 easily.

If the club wants to thank several volunteers, small blocks at £8.99 with VOLUNTEER AWARD on line one can go in the same order.

Questions

Can a non-playing member win clubman of the year?

Yes, and many winners are non-players. Groundstaff, scorers, tea volunteers and committee members are all common recipients, because the award is about service to the club rather than performance.

Can we name the award after a past member?

Yes. Many cricket clubs have a memorial trophy for this award. Put the full name, such as the member's name followed by MEMORIAL AWARD, on line one, and check how it sits in the live mock-up.

Should the award include the person's role?

It is a nice touch. Line four can read GROUNDSMAN, SCORER or TEAS, which tells future readers exactly what the winner did for the club.

What does delivery cost?

Delivery is a flat £10.00 per order, whatever the quantity. The minimum order is 5 awards, with small at £8.99 and large at £13.99, mixed however you like.
