Cricket Batting Average Award

The cricket batting average award is one of the oldest traditions in the club game. It goes to the batter who scored the most runs for each time they were dismissed, which rewards both run-scoring and staying in. Our version is a glass block UV-printed in full colour, with your club badge at the top and room below for the name, the XI and the figures that earned it.

Cricket end of season awards: how the average is worked out

A batting average is total runs divided by the number of times the batter was out. Not outs count towards the runs but not the dismissals, which is why a lower-order player who finishes unbeaten a few times can post a surprisingly high figure.

If your club scores on Play-Cricket, the averages are calculated for you. If you use a paper scorebook, the scorer or a willing committee member will need to total each player's runs and dismissals after the last game.

Setting a qualification

Without a minimum number of innings, a player who batted twice and scored a fifty and a not out thirty could top the list. Most clubs set a qualification, often a minimum number of innings or completed innings, agreed by the committee before the season.

Write the rule down and share it with the captains. Arguments about averages are a fixture of cricket dinners, and a clear rule settles most of them before they start.

Lower XIs need particular care. Batters in a 3rd XI may only get a handful of innings, because players move up and down the sides through the summer and matches get rained off. A qualification that suits the 1st XI can leave nobody eligible lower down, so some clubs set a smaller threshold for each side. Decide too whether runs scored for a different XI count, or whether each team's average stands alone.

Average or most runs

Some clubs give both a batting average award and a most runs award, because they reward different things. The average favours quality and consistency; most runs favours someone who batted every week and kept the scoreboard moving. Giving both is a good way to recognise an opener who played every game and a middle-order batter who rarely got out.

Each XI usually has its own batting award, so a club with several sides will order one per team.

Putting the figures on the award

Cricketers like to see their numbers. A layout that works well is BATTING AVERAGE on line one, your club name and 1ST XI on line two, the batter's name on line three and the figures on line four, for example 612 RUNS AT 47.08.

Small blocks at £8.99 are the usual size for per-XI batting awards. Set up the first, then add the other XIs using the same badge and change the team, name and figures.

Questions

Should we include the year on the award?

Many cricket clubs do, as a single year because the season sits within one summer. If you would rather fit the figures on line four, you can leave the year off.

Do T20 and friendly matches count?

That is a club decision. Many clubs keep separate averages for league, Sunday and midweek cricket and give a separate award for each format, so the numbers are comparable.

Can we call it the batting trophy instead?

Yes. BATTING TROPHY, BATTING AWARD or BEST BATTER all work on line one. Some clubs name it after a past member, which fits on the title line too.

How long will the awards take?

Made in Cornwall and delivered within 7 days Order once the scorer has confirmed the final averages, so the figures on the glass are correct. A late not out can change the second decimal place.
