Cricket Fielder of the Year Award

The cricket fielder of the year award is for the player who saves runs, takes the catches and keeps the side lively for fifty overs. Fielding rarely shows in the averages, yet every captain knows how many games it wins. Our glass awards carry your club badge in full colour, with the title, club, fielder's name and season printed below.

Cricket end of season awards: why fielding deserves its own award

Batting and bowling awards come straight from the scorebook. Fielding mostly does not. A boundary saved, a direct hit that leads to a run out or a sharp stop at point does not appear in anyone's average, but over a season it can be worth more than a handful of wickets.

A fielding award also rewards players who may not bat high or bowl much. That makes it valuable in lower XIs, where a keen fielder can transform the mood of a long afternoon.

How clubs choose the winner

Catches are the one fielding statistic most scorebooks record, and some clubs simply give the award to whoever took the most. Many feel that is too narrow, because it rewards whoever stands at slip.

A better approach is the captain's call, informed by catches, run outs and how often the player was trusted in the key positions. Some clubs ask each XI's captain to nominate and let the committee choose a club-wide winner.

Ask the scorers as well. They watch every ball from the box and often remember the misfields and the brilliant stops more clearly than the players do. A good fielder also sets the tone: chasing to the boundary in the fortieth over, backing up throws and keeping the bowlers going. Those habits are worth naming in the speech, especially in front of the juniors in the room.

Wicketkeepers and catch of the season

Decide early whether wicketkeepers are included. Keepers take far more catches than anyone else, so most clubs exclude them and give a separate wicketkeeper of the year award instead.

Catch of the season is a fun extra. It celebrates a single moment, the diving one-hander at gully or the boundary catch on the rope, and makes for a good story at the dinner. Put the opponent and the batter caught on line four if you want to record it.

Wording and ordering

FIELDER OF THE YEAR sits well on line one. Add the club and XI on line two, the winner on line three and either the year or a stat such as 14 CATCHES, 3 RUN OUTS on line four.

Small blocks at £8.99 are the usual choice, ordered with the rest of the club's cricket awards so the badge and style match across the set.

Good to know

Questions

Should the wicketkeeper be eligible?

Most clubs say no and run a separate wicketkeeper of the year award, because a keeper's catches would otherwise dominate. If your club has no regular keeper, including them is reasonable.

Is best fielder the same award?

Yes. BEST FIELDER, FIELDER OF THE YEAR and FIELDING AWARD are used interchangeably. Choose the one your club already reads out at the dinner, and keep it the same each year.

Can we print a description of the catch?

Yes, within reason. Line four can carry something short, such as the opponent and the batter's name. Check the live mock-up to make sure it still reads clearly.

When will the awards arrive?

Made in Cornwall and delivered within 7 days Order once the captains have agreed the winners, ideally soon after the last fixture, and put the fielding award in the same order as the batting and bowling awards.
