Cricket Young Cricketer of the Year Award

The cricket young cricketer of the year award goes to the junior who has made the biggest impression on the club. Often that means a teenager who has broken into adult league cricket alongside their age-group games. Sometimes it is simply the most promising player in the junior section. Our glass awards are printed in full colour with your club badge at the top and the young player's name below.

Cricket end of season awards: junior cricket and adult cricket together

Cricket is unusual in how early young players mix with adults. A capable thirteen or fourteen-year-old can be fielding in a 3rd XI on Saturday and playing under-15s on Tuesday evening. The young cricketer award often recognises that double life.

Clubs that weigh senior appearances heavily should say so in advance. Otherwise a strong age-group player who has not yet played adult cricket may feel overlooked.

County age-group selection is another factor. A junior picked for county squads may have played fewer club games because of it, while a teammate carried the club's under-15s all summer. Many clubs prefer to reward commitment to the club itself, mentioning any county honours in the speech instead. Whatever you decide, the award works best when the reasons are clear to the other juniors and their parents.

Who decides

The junior section co-ordinator and the age-group coaches usually agree a shortlist, with the senior captains asked for a view on anyone who has played adult cricket. Some clubs set an upper age, typically under-17s or under-18s at the start of the season.

Many junior sections hold their own presentation in late July or August, after the age-group leagues finish, rather than waiting for the senior dinner. Check which event the award belongs to before ordering.

Awards for each age group

Alongside the club-wide young cricketer, many sections give a player of the year for each age group, from under-9s up. The youngest children, including those in the ECB's All Stars and Dynamos programmes, are often given an award each simply for taking part.

Use the club line for the age group, for example your club name followed by U13. Small blocks at £8.99 suit age-group awards, while a large block at £13.99 gives the overall young cricketer the status it deserves.

Wording the award

YOUNG CRICKETER OF THE YEAR is a long title. If it looks tight in the live mock-up, JUNIOR CRICKETER OF THE YEAR or YOUNG PLAYER OF THE YEAR are common alternatives. Put the year on line four, as a single year because cricket is a summer sport.

Junior sections tend to order in bulk, so paste the list of names once the first design is set up.

Questions

Should girls' and boys' sections have separate awards?

Many clubs with growing girls' sections now run a separate young cricketer award for each, as the formats and competitions often differ. Both can go in the same order with the same badge.

Can the winner also take a senior award?

Yes. A teenager who topped the 3rd XI bowling averages can take both. Most clubs are happy to see it, as it shows the junior pathway working.

What should we put on awards for All Stars children?

Keep it simple and positive: the club badge, a title such as ALL STARS or WELL DONE, and the child's name. Leave the year off if you would rather keep the line free.

How many awards must we order?

At least 5 per order, which a junior section will usually pass easily. Small and large can be mixed freely, with a flat £10.00 delivery charge.
