Golf Captain's Prize Award

A golf captain's prize award marks the winner of the captain's own competition, usually the biggest social day in the club's summer. The captain hosts the event, often starts the day by greeting every group on the first tee, and puts up the prize personally. Because the competition is played off handicap, any member can win it, and many golfers treasure it more than a scratch title.

Golf end of season awards: captain's day traditions

Captain's day usually falls in midsummer, with a full field, a halfway hut and an evening meal or barbecue in the clubhouse. Formats vary: some clubs play a medal, others a Stableford, and some run qualifying rounds before a final. The lady captain, seniors' captain and junior captain often run their own versions too.

The winner traditionally receives the prize from the captain that evening, and their name goes on the captain's prize board.

Prizes beyond the winner

Captains often give prizes for the runner-up, third place, best front nine, best back nine, nearest the pin and longest drive. Some add a prize for the best guest score or the best junior.

That makes captain's day a natural fit for a mixed order: a large block for the winner and small blocks for the other places and specialty prizes. With a minimum order of 5, the whole prize table is usually covered in one go.

Wording for a captain's prize award

Many clubs like the captain named on the award, since each prize is tied to one captain's year. Try line 1 "CAPTAIN'S PRIZE", line 2 "Captain: J. Hocking" or the captain's full name, line 3 the winner and line 4 the year.

For the lady captain's competition, "LADY CAPTAIN'S PRIZE" fits on line 1. If you include the winning score, "Nett 66" or "41 Points" sits neatly on the name line. Type names exactly as the captain wants them to appear, as they will be shown on the night.

Planning around the day

Prizes are usually presented on the evening of captain's day, so you will not know the winners in advance. Most captains set up the design weeks before, then order the named awards straight after the day and present them at the annual dinner. Others present the cup on the night and the glass keepsake later.

If the captain wants to present everything on the evening itself, one approach is to order awards for the specialty prizes, such as nearest the pin on a named hole, with the title and year only, leaving the name line blank. The winners then receive them on the night, and only the main prize carries a name.

A record of the captain's year

Captains serve for a single year at most clubs, and many like to give a small award to everyone who helped on the day, such as the starter, the halfway hut volunteers and the competition secretary. A short title like "With Thanks" and the captain's name on line 2 turns these into a memento of that year.

Questions

Who usually pays for the captain's prize?

By tradition the captain puts up the prize personally, though practice varies between clubs. Our awards are ordered online and paid by card at checkout, so whoever is buying can order directly.

Can the captain's name go on the award?

Yes. Use one of the four lines, for example "Captain: Sarah Penrose". It makes each year's award distinct and records whose year it was, which members tend to appreciate later.

Can we order prizes for nearest the pin and longest drive too?

Yes. Each award in the order can have its own title, name and size, so the specialty prizes sit in the same order as the main prize.

When will the awards arrive?

Made in Cornwall and delivered within 7 days As captain's day results come in that evening, many captains order straight after the day and present the personal awards at the annual dinner.
