Football Player of the Season Award

The football player of the season award is normally the last trophy announced on presentation night, and the one everyone in the room is waiting for. It goes to the player who did it week after week across the whole campaign, not just in the cup final. Ours is a glass block UV-printed in full colour, with your club crest at the top and the winner's name and season below.

Football end of season awards: what the award is really for

Over a grassroots league season of twenty-odd games, plus cup ties, the player of the season is the one whose name was on the team sheet every week and who rarely had a poor game. It rewards consistency more than a few highlights.

That is what separates it from the other awards. Top goalscorer is a number, players' player is a vote among the squad, and manager's player is one person's view. Player of the season is the club's overall verdict, so it usually carries the most weight on the night.

How clubs pick the winner

There is no single method. Some clubs leave it to the manager and coaching staff. Others add up player of the match picks across the season, so the winner is backed by a running total. A few combine both, with the committee making the final call if the numbers are close.

Whichever route you take, decide it before the season ends and tell the squad. Players accept a result far more easily when they know how it was reached.

It also helps to agree what counts. A player who was outstanding until a long injury in February may still be the right choice, or the club may prefer someone who was available all year. Neither answer is wrong, but the committee should settle it before names are discussed, not after. Cup games, especially county cup runs, often tip a close decision, so make sure whoever is choosing has watched those matches or read the reports.

Choosing a size and wording

Most clubs give the headline award the large block, a taller portrait shape at £13.99, so it stands out next to the smaller squad awards. PLAYER OF THE SEASON fits comfortably as a title on line one.

If your club runs several adult sides, add the team to the club line, for example your club name with RESERVES or VETERANS after it. Put the winner's full name on line three and the season, such as 2025/26, on line four. Some clubs prefer PLAYER OF THE YEAR; both are common in football and either reads well.

Fitting it into the wider awards order

Because you need at least 5 awards per order, the player of the season block is usually ordered alongside the rest of the night's trophies. Design it first, then use the same crest for the other awards and just change the title and name for each.

If a junior section runs its own presentation, every age group can have a player of the season in the same order, each with its own team line and name.

Good to know

Questions

What if two players are level for player of the season?

Plenty of clubs simply name joint winners. Order two awards with identical wording apart from the name line, so neither player feels they received the lesser version. Mention it in the speech so the room understands it was a genuine tie.

Should player of the season go to under-9s?

At mini-soccer ages many clubs skip individual player of the season awards and give every child the same award instead. From around under-12s, naming a single player of the season becomes more common.

Can I include the player's position or shirt number?

Yes. Any of the four text lines can carry what you like, so you could put CENTRE BACK or a shirt number after the name, or use it in place of the season line.

How long will the awards take to arrive?

Made in Cornwall and delivered within 7 days It is worth ordering as soon as the winners are agreed, so the awards are in hand well before the presentation evening and there is time to check every name on the night.
